IBEW LOCAL 271 2014 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED

                                             

                           1st place winner Melissa Meyer, wife of 271 member Vernon Meyer                    2nd place winner Emily Flax, daughter of 271 member Jerome Flax

 

At the August meeting, Business Manager Roger King announced that Melissa Meyer had earned 1st place

and Emily Flax had earned 2nd place in the annual IBEW 271 Scholarship Competition.

To win the competition, the Scholarship Committee judged that Melissa and Emily had written the 2 best essays on the subject of:

"Why is it important for Union Members to be politically educated and active?"

Melissa will receive $1,200 per year for up to 4 years and Emily will receive $800 per year for up to 4 years.

Each recipient must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA to maintain their scholarship.

Melissa will be attending Butler County Community College and Emily will be attending Wichita State University.

Congratulations to both of you!

At the July meeting, Nolan Scott Carrell was sworn into membership.

 

 

Allen Stuewe Retires At The June Meeting

Brother Allen Stuewe receives his IBEW retirement watch from President David Kalitta and Business Manager Roger King.

Allen Stuewe officially retired at the June monthly meeting.

Allen has been associated with IBEW LU 271 since 1974, when he became an apprentice.

Brother Stuewe became a member in April of 1975 and successfully completed his apprenticeship in 1978.

Allen then spent the majority of his career working at either Shelley Electric, Wichita Electric, or Atlas Electric.

Here's hoping that Allen has a long and healthy retirement.

 

 

New Executive Board Officer Takes Oath Of Office

During the May, 2014 meeting Ron Neises was sworn in as our newest Executive Board Officer.

 

 

IBEW LU 271 CELEBRATES ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY

On Saturday, April 12, 2014 IBEW LU 271 celebrated its 100th anniversary.

 Approximately 750 Construction members, Spirit Aerospace members, retirees, spouses,

and special guests gathered at Century II for a truly wonderful evening of celebration.

There was plenty of good food, good drink, and a great band (the Cool Blue Band).

Most of the speakers kept their speeches short and everyone enjoyed reminiscencing

with old friends and acquaintances.  In short, everyone had a great time and the evening

went by way to quickly.

If you missed this one, you truly did miss out on a once in a century event.

IBEW & NECA SPONSOR A CONCERO EPR LIVE PAYROLL REPORTING CLASS

In late March, IBEW 271 and Kansas NECA co-sponsored a training class on the new Concero EPR Live payroll accounting program.

Payroll representatives from many of our contractors participated in what turned out to be a very educational and enlightening seminar.

A special thanks goes out to Serena and Sheri from NECA for leading the class.

 

       

 

 

 

New Recording Secretary

Derek Hogan gets sworn in as the new Recording Secretary at the March 2014 meeting.

The Exectutive Board selected Derek after he volunteered to fill the position vacated by Brother Jim Fonze when he retired.

Derek said that he volunteered because he felt a need to get more involved with his local union.

 

IBEW LU 271 2014 SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION ANNOUNCED

Dan Veach, Dave Kalitta, Roger King, Kent Moeder, and Tony Young meet to discuss this year's Scholarship Competition.

This year's Scholarship Essay Topic will be

"Why is it important for Union Members to be politically educated and active?"

The contest is open to the spouses and children of IBEW 271 members who are working

(or available for work) under the terms of our collective bargaining agreement.

  Recording Secretary Jim Fonzo Retires!

  

Business Manager Roger King offers congratulations, an appreciation plaque,

and a retirement watch to Jim Fonzo, who will officially retire March 1.

 

At the February 2014 monthly meeting, Jim Fonzo was given a IBEW retirement watch

and an appreciation plaque.  Jim first worked as an Electrical helper for Southwestern Electric

in 1992 before being accepted into the Apprenticeship in 1993.  Jim became an IBEW member in 1994

and then completed his Apprenticeship and became a Journeyman in May of 1998. Jim has

always been very involved with our union and in 2004 was elected to the office of Recording Secretary.

Here's hoping that Jim will have a long, healthy, and happy retirement.

                                                 

 

 

                                                            Spirit Aerosystems Chief Stewart Mike Baker Retires!

            

                             

                                            Spirit Unit Chief Stewart Mike Baker retired on January 16, 2014.

                              Mike has been a member of the IBEW for 35 years and first became a Steward in 1982.

                               In addition to being an excellent Maintenance Electrician, Mike has served our Union

                              in many capacities including being on the Safety Committee and the Negotiating Team.

                                    Here's hoping that Mike's retirement is as good for him as he was for the IBEW!

Michele Retires!

 

Office Manager Michele Maddox, who has been our Office Manager since 1992,

officially retired at the end of December.

On December 18th, a "Meet & Greet" was held for Michele

at the Union Hall complete with burgers, dogs, brats, and all the fixins.

From around 11am till 6 pm the Union Hall was filled with grateful members,

contractors, and others who all wanted to say goodby to Michele

and thank her for her years of dedicated service to our union and industry.

Michele will always be remembered for the professionalism she brought with her to the job along

with the love and compassion she used when dealing with our membership and their families,

especially the kids!

Thanks again Michele and may your retirement be long, happy, and healthy.

 

            

 

 

 

New Apprenticeship Class Gets Sworn In    

  

             42 members of the new apprenticeship class got sworn into membership                      Joining the apprentices was Heidi Schulze, the new office manager for IBEW LU 271,                                                          during the December meeting.                                                                                              who also became a new IBEW LU 271 member.      

 

 

3 GENERATIONS OF IBEW LU 271 MEMBERS

When new apprentice Joseph Keys got sworn into membership in December,

he became the 3rd generation of the Keys family to become an IBEW 271 member.

Grampa Dale Keys was a long time employee of Shelley Electric and is now retired.

Father Jeff Keys is an estimator at Atlas Electric.

To make this story even neater, Dale's father in-law, Bud Bulla,

was also an IBEW 271 member.

 

 

FREE CLASS AT THE UNION HALL

Instructor Mike Faulk makes a point during the Free Class at the Union Hall on November 9.

On Saturday, November 9, IBEW LU 271 sponsored a free CEU class at the Union Hall.

This 6 hour class covered NEC Chapter 5 Hazardous Locations and NEC 517 Healthcare Facilities.

We had a great turn out and everyone went home just a little bit smarter.

 

 

IBEW LU 271 ANNUAL PICNIC

The IBEW LU 271 annual picnic was held at Eberly Farm on Saturday, September 21. It was a perfect fall day

and over 700 members and their families attended.  As always, the food prepared by the Eberly Farm crew

was fantastic.  While the adults visited and caught up with old friends, the kids were kept busy with the face painters,

the photo booth, and all the other usual activities supplied by Eberly Farm.

I think it would be safe to say that a good time was had by all.

   

     

      

    

 

 

 

IBEW LU 271 2013 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER ANNOUNCED

At the September meeting, Business Manager Roger King announced that Ivan Wood,

son of member Robert Wood, had won the IBEW LU 271 2013 Scholarship Competition.

To win the competition, the Scholarship Committee judged that Ivan had written the best essay on the subject of:

"What is the relevance of our Union in today's society?"

Ivan will receive $1,200 per year for up to 4 years as long as he maintains a 2.5 GPA.

Ivan will be attending Butler County Community College.

FREE CEU CLASS AT THE UNION HALL

On Saturday, May 11, IBEW 271 sponsored a 6 hour "Significant Changes To The NEC" class at the Union Hall.

Approximately 80 of our members and guests enjoyed an educational morning with JATC instructor Darryl Hill

as he took them thru the many important changes and additions to the NEC.

 

SPIRIT UNIT ADVANCED STEWARD TRAINING CLASS

On Saturday, April 27, International Representatives Linda Mathews and Todd Newkirk

presented a 6 hour advanced Stewards training class for the Spirit Unit.  As always,

Linda and Todd did an excellent job of presenting the material and getting everyone involved.

 

 

CONTRACT VOTE

 

Business Manager Roger King explains the contract negotiated

between the IBEW LU 271 Inside Construction Unit and Kansas Chapter NECA

at a special meeting held on April 17.

Brother King then answered questions from the membership about the contract.

The membership then voted unanimously to ratify the new 4 year contract.

Congratulations to the negotiation teams from both the IBEW and NECA

for working out a contract that was fair and equable to both parties.

 

 

New member Chris Polermo got sworn in during April's monthly meeting.

 

NEW LAPEL PIN IN THE WORKS

 

IBEW 271 members are urged to submitt their own design for a new lapel pin

to commemorate our 100th anniversary, which happens next April.

The membership will get to vote on which design to use.

Above are 3 of our existing lapel pins.

 

 

 

STEWARDS TRAINING 2013

On Saturday, January 26, and Saturday, February 9, IBEW International Representatives

Todd Newkirk from the 7th District and Linda Matthews from the Education Department

taught 2 - 6 hour Stewards Training classes for IBEW LU 271's Spirit Unit and the Inside Construction Unit.

Everyone agreed that the classes were interesting, informative, and well worth attending.

At the February 2013 meeting, new members John Walker and Shawn Henry were sworn in.

 

 

Scott Cooper, General Manager of the Kansas Star Casino, spoke at the December 2012 meeting.

He wanted to the thank the IBEW 271 membership for the wonderful job they had done on the Casino.

Scott also talked about the next phases of construction at the casino which includes

finishing the Arena, the Equestrian Center, and doubling the size of the hotel.

We had a great turnout for the "Free Class At The Union Hall" on Saturday, November 10.

The 6 hour class was broken down into two parts.  The first part provided insight into NEC Chapter 5

in regards to specific locations and their unique requirements.  The second part provided insight

into the related standards and codes that apply to health card facilities.

Thanks to WEJATC instructor Mike Faulk for doing a wonderful job.

On Saturday, September 22, over 650 IBEW 271 members and their families enjoyed a gorgeous fall day

full of of fun, friends and food at the 2012 annual IBEW PICNIC at Eberly Farms.

To win this award, Local IBEW Unions must have had at least 75% of their Journeyman attend

Journeyman Education Classes in the last calendar year.

This is the 15th National Training Award that IBEW LU 271 has received.

IBEW 271 received the award for the outstanding efforts of its membership

and contractors in getting the company up and rolling again after it was struck by a tornado last spring.

Jim lead our local for more than 20 years and no one has ever

cared more about IBEW 271 and its members than he did.

Jim has always said that "you should leave the campground better off when you leave it,"

and brother, did he ever do that for our local.

IBEW LU 271 2011 Scholarship Contest Winner Announced

This year's essay question was

"What are the effects on state workers when state governments take away their collective bargaining rights?"

Natalie Loggans, daughter of IBEW 271 member Mike Loggans,

won a $1000 a year scholarship for up to 4 years with an excellent paper on the subject.

Natalie will be attending Kansas State University.

 

 

IBEW International Representatives Debra Harget and Linda Mathews got everyone involved in some lively discussion

during the Leadership Education And Planning for Organizing  (LEAP) class that was held on Saturday, July 23 at our Union Hall.

Six International Reps and around 30 IBEW Union Leaders and from all over the 7th District participated.

 

 

Instructor Mike Foulk addresses a full house at the CEU class sponsored by Local 271.

The 6 hour class covered Hazardous Locations and Health Care Facilities.

The class was held on Saturday, July 16 from 7:30 am till 1:30 pm.and was free for all 271 members and guests.

Over 90 participants signed up for the 6 CEU class and refreshments were provided.

Over 30 members participated in the two classes held.

The Code Of Excellence is a program to promote jobsite excellence and customer satisfaction.

It is a commitment by both Labor and Management to excellence in customer service.

from Assistant Business Manager Roger King at the June, 2011 Union Meeting. 

During over 40 years of IBEW membership, Norman served in almost every capacity from apprentice to estimator.

IBEW LU 271 2010 Scholarship Contest Winner Announced

This year's winner of our annual Scholarship contest was Melissa Hoover, daughter of Brother Mike Hoover.

Melissa won a $1000 a year scholarship for up to 4 years.

Melissa will be attending the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Kansas University.

 

 

Brother Charlie Ford received his retirement watch at the August 2010 meeting. 

Charlie started working with the IBEW 37 years ago.

We all wish him the very best in his retirement years.

 

 

Brother Stanley Ford was presented his retirement watch at the June 2010 meeting. 

Stanley has been a member of the IBEW for 37 years.

His many contributions to our local include serving as an Executive Board member and fulfilling the duties of Recording Secretary.

Stanley received the IBEW Life Saving Award in 1998 for pulling an accident victim from a burning truck.

We all wish Stanley the very best.

 

 

Brother Terry Sterling received his retirement watch at the May, 2010 meeting.

Terry has been an IBEW member for 34 years.  Terry was the Apprentice of the Year in 1978

and won the John Jenner Award as the Outstanding Apprentice for the entire 7th District.

Terry served our Local in many capacities.  These include Apprentice Instructor, Executive Board member,

Examininig Board member, Scholarship Committee, and Steward.

We all wish Terry a long and happy retirement.

Jerry has been a member of the IBEW for 35 years.

Jerry worked the last 27 years of his career for A&H Electric.

We all wish Jerry the very best.

The IBEW 271 Boeing Unit negotiation team prepares for contact negotiations.

Contract negotiations between the Unit and Boeing Management will take place this November.

 

 

New members Bryan Wallace and Jake Beyer joined about 80 other IBEW 271 Journeyman for the CEU class "Significant Changes to the 2008 NEC".

The free six hour class was held Saturday, November 14 and was taught by full time JATC instructor Darryl Hill.

Choices included grilled chicken, brisket, foot long hot dogs, and all the trimmings.

          Brother Paul Korntheuer received his retirement watch at the July, 2009 meeting.

Paul has been a member of the IBEW for 35 years.

Paul served the IBEW in many ways, including serving as President and Organizer.

We all wish Paul a long and happy retirement.

 

 

 

Brother Dale Nice was presented his retirement watch at the July, 2009 meeting.

Dale has been an IBEW member for 42 years.

Dale worked for Shelley Electric the past 28 years.

We all wish Dale the very best.

 

 

Graduating Apprenticeship Class of 2009

IBEW 271 and it's Signatory Contractors have 26 new highly trained Journeyman.  The apprenticeship class of 2009 participated

in graduation ceremonies on June 27 at the Rolling Hills Country Club. Six of the graduates received perfect attendance awards and

Chris Novak was recognized as the Apprentice of the Year based on class room scores and work reports.  Congratulations to all!

Terry has been a member of the IBEW for 43 years.

Terry served the IBEW in many ways, including being an Examining Board member and a Shop Steward.

We all wish Terry a long and happy retirement.

Doug has been an IBEW member for 37 years.

The IBEW Annnual Picnic was held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Eberly Farms.  Over 600 members

and their families participated and enjoyed the wonderful weather and great food.

                    Graduating Class of 2008

IBEW 271 has 24 new highly trained Journeyman.  The apprenticeship class of 2008 participated in graduation

ceremonies on July 26 at the Rolling Hills Country Club. The class average was 91.8% and five students received

perfect attendance awards. Congratulations to all!

 

 

Member Joe Rodriguez had the winning ticket in the COPE give away.  Joe won a 2000 Taurus which worked out great for his daughter. She had just gotten her learners permit and her favorite color just happened to be red.

It's probably a good thing Joe's hair is already gray.

 

Spearville (KS)

   The Spearville Wind Energy Facility

 

 

 

 

 

IBEW 271 Electricians are wiring the new Sedgwick County Arena.  This facility will be a great addition to downtown Wichita.

 

 

 

 

IBEW 271 Electricians have now wired two wind energy facilities. 

The Elk River Wind Power Project located near Beaumont went on line in December of 2005. The project included 100 turbines that will generate 150 megawatts which will produce enough power annually to supply about 42,000 homes. 

The Spearville Wind Energy Facility went on line in June of 2006. Its 67 turbines will generate 100.5 megawatts - enough to supply about 33,000 homes annually.

IBEW 271 electricians will also wire the 2nd phase of the Spearville Facility starting early in 2009.

 

 

 

The new Sedgwick County Arena takes shape.

 

 

 

The IBEW 271 Spirit Aerospace Unit met on July 11 to review, debate, and vote on an economic opener in the current contract. The proposed changes were accepted by a 69% margin.
